Lunasin works at the epigenetic level within your cells providing multiple health benefits
The scientific community acknowledges the heart health benefits of soy, a claim validated in 1999 by the Food and Drug Administration. Studies show that lunasin, a naturally occurring peptide found in soy, is largely responsible for soy’s cholesterol-lowering properties.
Dr. Alfredo Galvez, the geneticist who discovered lunasin in 1996, presented his work on lunasin at the American Heart Association Scientific Sessions (Session on Nutrition in Cardiovascular Disease Risk and Prevention) on Nov. 5, 2012 in Los Angeles, CA. Over 75 invited speaker sessions, 18,000 professional attendees and 105 countries were represented at the AHA Scientific Sessions. The AHA published his findings.
Dual-Action Lunasin Cholesterol comes from two sources: dietary intake and our body’s own production in the liver. Over 80% of cholesterol comes from the liver, so the most effective way to lower LDL (bad) cholesterol is to control the liver’s internal production. The lunasin in LunaRich does so in two ways:
Selectively disrupts a step in the production of an enzyme key to cholesterol synthesis in the liver.
Increases the number of receptors available in liver cells to clear LDL cholesterol from the bloodstream.
Your body needs a minimum level of cholesterol for proper cellular function. Cholesterol is produced in the liver by the HMG-CoA reductase gene. Simply blocking HMG-CoA can lead to health problems. Lunasin targets cholesterol at an earlier stage, reducing the HMG-CoA without blocking it entirely. The result is cholesterol-lowering benefits without disrupting the body’s normal functioning.
Studies show the effectiveness of soy in promoting optimal fitness. The elevated lunasin levels in LunaRich®
soy powder and LunaRich X™ capsules provide added benefits. Lunasin protects against oxidative stress and inflammation caused by high-impact exercise. Over time, this oxidation can cause cell damage throughout the body.
According to a study at the University of Illinois, lunasin works to protect cells by reducing the negative effects of oxidative stress and by regulating the body’s inflammatory response. Lunasin can offer long-term cell protection when consumed regularly.
Metabolic Syndrome and High Blood Sugar
The symptoms of high blood sugar can cause very serious long-term damage to your body — even if you feel fine.
Metabolic syndrome — a cluster of symptoms including high blood sugar, obesity and cardiovascular problems — has reached epidemic proportions. Excess weight, particularly around the waistline, is the biggest contributor to metabolic syndrome. A person with metabolic syndrome is twice as likely to develop heart disease and five times more likely to develop diabetes. Other silent symptoms include eye, kidney and nervous system damage over time.
Genetics and Chronic Disease
You may have heard that certain chronic diseases — including obesity, type II diabetes, ALS — can be genetic. But new groundbreaking research is uncovering a higher level of complexity beyond genetic variation. Even better news: proper nutrition can produce positive changes at this higher level.
A recent article by the Associated Press highlighted new data the Encyclopedia of DNA Elements (ENCODE) project recently published in Nature – the international weekly journal of science.
“The scientific establishment has finally acknowledged that there is more than just DNA or the genome to explain how chronic diseases develop and how the environment, like nutrition and lifestyle, can have profound effects in altering our health,” said Dr. Alfredo Galvez, renowned research scientist at the Center of Excellence in Nutritional Genomics at UC Davis and lead scientific advisor at the Missouri Plant Science Center.
One of the most exciting discoveries in the fight against metabolic syndrome was discovered by Dr. Galvez: a soy peptide called lunasin. Lunasin works beyond the genome at the epigenomic level to promote optimal health. Changes in the epigenome can cause symptoms associated with metabolic syndrome. Lunasin attaches to the histones and helps the epigenome function properly, so that these changes do not occur in the cells.
Reliv’s Metabolic Dynamic Duo
A recent study of pigs supplemented daily with Reliv Now® and LunaRich X™ for eight weeks showed significant improvement in key biomarkers associated with metabolic health.
Test subjects recorded a lessening in weight gain and a 65% reduction in free fatty acid (FFA) levels, a biomarker associated with obesity and metabolic syndrome. While previous experiments had demonstrated LunaRich X’s ability to lower LDL cholesterol, FFA levels remained relatively unchanged with LunaRich X supplementation alone. Only when combined with Reliv Now did researchers see a significant reduction in FFA levels.
The decrease in FFA levels was accompanied by coordinate increases in plasma levels of the hormones leptin (+64%) and adiponectin (+60%). Leptin signals the brain when the body had enough food, producing the feeling of fullness. Adiponectin (ADP) is a hormone from fat cells that controls energy metabolism, increases insulin sensitivity and supports weight loss. The two hormones perform complementary actions and can have additive effects on weight management. View the study.
Take Steps Now
As usual with health risks, prevention is the best route. The more we learn about insulin resistance, diabetes, and metabolic syndrome, the more solutions we can discover.
A Note from Dr. Carl: Supporting healthy blood sugar levels, one can at a time
Diabetes is a serious health concern in our country and around the world. Those suffering from diabetes and metabolic syndrome need all the support they can get. Here at Reliv, we’ve developed a product specifically for supporting healthy blood sugar levels: patented GlucAffect® with LunaRich®.
In an 8-week placebo-controlled clinical study, four servings of GlucAffect lowered the fasting glucose levels of overweight individuals by 30%. Plus, these individuals were able to lose an average of 16 lbs. in those 8 weeks. Losing weight can be a tremendous help in the fight against diabetes and metabolic syndrome.
With GlucAffect and the combination of Reliv Now and LunaRich X, Reliv is leading the way in delivering cutting-edge nutritional solutions for the metabolic health challenges we face today.

Overall Cellular Health and Aging
Lunasin’s effectiveness comes from its ability to promote optimal cell health. Lunasin provides a second line of defense against cellular damage when the body’s initial defenses are depleted. Here’s how it works:
Lunasin nourishes - provides the nutritional fuel to promote optimal expression of genes required for normal cell function.
Lunasin protects - reduces inflammation and cell damage caused by free radicals and other environmental hazards. Provides protection in two ways:
Prevention. Activates the expression of genes that help reduce cell damage and prevents the expression of genes that can cause cell damage.
Maintenance. Helps remove damaged cells from the body that may cause chronic health problems.
And the list keeps growing
Unstable oxygen molecules known as free radicals enter our bodies from a wide range of sources — everything from smoke and unhealthy foods to sunshine and air. Antioxidants in our diet work to neutralize these cell-damaging invaders and include nutrients such as beta carotene, vitamin C, vitamin E and many more.
Lunasin, a naturally occurring peptide in soy, has been clinically shown to function as an antioxidant in three ways:
Reduces oxidation of linoleic acid that produces oxygen radicals
Acts like an oxygen radical scavenger (traditional antioxidant mechanism)
Reduces oxygen radicals produced by macrophages. Macrophages are highly specialized cells that remove dying or dead cells and cellular debris.
Study after study continues to uncover more health benefits of the amazing soy peptide lunasin. Because it works at the epigenetic level— at the very root of gene expression and cellular function — lunasin impacts multiple aspects of human health. One of the most recent lunasin studies demonstrated its effectiveness in strengthening the immune system.
Immune cells in your body contain receptors that are genetically primed to respond to germs and other environmental toxins and remove them. If these receptors are slow to respond in your immune cells, your body’s innate defenses do not function properly.
A study conducted at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis in 2012 showed that lunasin can affect this process. Results of the study demonstrated that lunasin works to stimulate immune cell receptors, thus boosting innate immunity — the body’s first line of defense.
